Survivor Moms' Companion® | Info for Providers
Survivor Moms' Companion® (SMC) is for your clients who are pregnant, postpartum, or parenting a child up to 3 years old.
There are two ways to connect your clients to SMC.
- Your agency or practice can offer SMC to your own clients. This requires sending a team member to training to become a certified SMC Tutor.
- Your agency or practice can refer clients to our Find Your Tutor directory where they can engage with a certified SMC Tutor of their choosing. This requires your agency or practice to participate in a two-hour workshop to learn more about SMC content and how to refer.
SMC is a targeted program, so it is for anyone who can self-identify as having a history of childhood maltreatment or sexual trauma. It is a present- and future-focused psychoeducation program. There is no trauma processing involved. People who use SMC may need or want to engage in treatment for PTSD, depression, or substance use. Referral to specialist-level treatment should be available in settings where clients are using SMC.
SMC helps clients
- See how past trauma can adversely affect their childbearing and parenting
- Manage PTSD reactions to triggers survivor parents having in common
- Regulate emotions from anger to dissociation and use adaptive coping
- Navigate relationships with professionals and the newborn-to-three child
- Develop an identity as a safe, nurturing, reliable survivor parent
